Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The #1 New York Times bestselling author of World War Z is back with “the Bigfoot thriller you didn’t know you needed in your life, and one of the greatest horror novels I’ve ever read” (Blake Crouch, author of Dark Matter and Recursion).

FINALIST FOR THE LOCUS AWARD

As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined . . . until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing—and too earth-shattering in its implications—to be forgotten. In these pages, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it. Kate’s is a tale of unexpected strength and resilience, of humanity’s defiance in the face of a terrible predator’s gaze, and, inevitably, of savagery and death.

Yet it is also far more than that.

Because if what Kate Holland saw in those days is real, then we must accept the impossible. We must accept that the creature known as Bigfoot walks among us—and that it is a beast of terrible strength and ferocity.

Part survival narrative, part bloody horror tale, part scientific journey into the boundaries between truth and fiction, this is a Bigfoot story as only Max Brooks could chronicle it—and like none you’ve ever read before.

I don’t get why all the reviews are saying that this is such a page turner. I was turning pages, alright… trying to find some action. The whole first part of this book is boring diary entries, and interviews with people who have nothing to say. I kept wondering: when does the attack come?

Amazing. Read it. I wish there was more or a sequel to keep going, it’s that good.

Where to start… If you’re a familiar with Max Brook’s writing then rest assure you’ll have a good time. It’s gripping and never let’s go of your focus. The horrors of the violent behavior of the main threat keep you turning the page, however the idealogical horror of what the characters and who we are in modern times is what stays with you after you finish. This is one of those rare instances where art imitates real world. Without spoiling, the pin drop realization of how defenseless and unprepared we are for real crisis, will make you think and fear your own emergency readiness and actual knowledge of survival skills.

Just finished the book and it was great. Did not expect the idea of big foot to be expanded in this manner. I had no expectation on the story so when it ended, it was all unexpected. Highly reccomend.

This book is fiction but the summary makes it sound like nonfiction.

Lately, I’ve been really taken by first-person narrative books like this. Each journal entry gives you just enough to keep reading as you piece the story together. This was a great story - not too far-fetched. Will definitely having me listening to my surroundings more closely next time I go camping!
