One of Time Magazine’s 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time

“I have no doubt this will end up being the best fantasy debut of the year...I have absolutely no doubt that [Kuang’s] name will be up there with the likes of Robin Hobb and N.K. Jemisin.” — Booknest

From #1 New York Times bestselling author of Babel and Yellowface, the brilliantly imaginative debut of R.F. Kuang: an epic historical military fantasy, inspired by the bloody history of China’s twentieth century and filled with treachery and magic, in the tradition of Ken Liu’s Grace of Kings and N.K. Jemisin’s Inheritance Trilogy.

When Rin aced the Keju—the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies—it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard—the most elite military school in Nikan—was even more surprising.

But surprises aren’t always good.

Because being a dark-skinned peasant girl from the south is not an easy thing at Sinegard. Targeted from the outset by rival classmates for her color, poverty, and gender, Rin discovers in this grimdark fantasy that she possesses a lethal, unearthly power—an aptitude for the nearly-mythical art of shamanism. Exploring the depths of her gift with the help of a seemingly insane teacher and psychoactive substances, Rin learns that gods long thought dead are very much alive—and that mastering control over those powers could mean more than just surviving school.

For while the Nikara Empire is at peace, the Federation of Mugen still lurks across a narrow sea. The militarily advanced Federation occupied Nikan for decades after the First Poppy War, and only barely lost the continent in the Second. And while most of the people are complacent to go about their lives, a few are aware that a Third Poppy War is just a spark away . . .

Rin’s shamanic powers may be the only way to save her people. But as she finds out more about the god that has chosen her, the vengeful Phoenix, she fears that winning the war may cost her humanity . . . and that it may already be too late.

Book was exciting, the story line and the main character herself was beautiful adventure.

Cool world building and kind of slow pacing but I agree with another reviewer that said the info dumps get boring. Still it wasn’t bad enough to take away from how good it is over all.

I really enjoyed the worldbuilding, character building and plot but her world got boring around the midpoint. I think she info dumps like 95% of the time as if she was writing an essay and it gets a little bit boring. It could be a longer book with such dense material.
  • Richly Immersive

Kuang’s book The Poppy War is a rampart book. The main characters and scenes are surrounded and protected within a tightly-woven plot that cannot and will not be broken. Read other reviews and you’ll find that the world Kuang builds is one of the most immersive endeavors achieved in recent years. The only criticism I offer is that illustrated maps may have alleviated some of my angst of being lost in a world so big. A small complaint against such a rich chaos of feel, touch, sound, sight, smell, and taste.
  • Solid!

Solid prose. Believable characters. A compelling depiction of the (lack of) morality in war. My main critique is that the themes are so beyond *not* subtle you couldn’t miss the point even if you were trying to. This isn’t necessarily a *bad* thing, especially for the reading level of YA, but not Oscar worthy to me.
  • Chinese propaganda

You probably heard of this book from TikTok. There’s a reason for that. Starts well. Fades into fantasy with no real human relationships or growth to speak of. Deviates into pure anti-Japan propaganda, and then I don’t even know what at the end there. Not worth your time.

Kuang writes well but this was a grueling book
  • Action packed and Thought Provoking

Kuang does a great job of pulling in history, citing philosophy, and best of all exploring spirituality. Her comment that “if you were in Rin’s shoes is it possible you would make the same choices?” I love the book and highly recommend but feel as though some more romance and comedy (which we got between Jiang and Rin) would make it more well rounded.

Exactly what the title says. Run becomes altruistic at will push to win the war by any means necessary
  • Goosebumps!

Amazing from beginning to end! Never been captured by a book just by reading the first chapter! I even went back to read past chapters just to get goosebumps again!
