Description

Charlie is gone, and Lincoln finds that Lichfield Towers offers no sanctuary. With reminders of her at every turn, and employees threatening to mutiny, he must try to find the murderer who is killing supernaturals on his own. And keep the murderer away from Charlie.

When the strongman from the visiting Barnum and Bailey's circus is murdered, Lincoln suspects a link, but piecing together the clues becomes dangerous and difficult work. He can't afford to be distracted, yet he finds he can't concentrate fully on the task. Even worse, Seth's mother, the incomparable Lady Vickers, has come to stay.

ASHES TO ASHES is a bonus novella-length story, written entirely from Lincoln's point of view. It is shorter than the rest of the books in the Ministry of Curiosities series.

  • Lincoln’s Thoughts and Athleticism

At first, the pace of the book has slowed down considerably. It doesn’t have that personality of Charlie… BUT THEN… being inside Lincoln’s thoughts and reading about his athleticism became very intriguing. We get to experience Lincoln’s rude thoughts, his judgements of others in a humorous way, and his compassion that is rarely picked up by others. His emotions of disgust, annoyance, frustration, or to see him open up because it felt right. He wasn’t always a statue of no emotions, and that shed light on who he was in the previous four books. To read about Lincoln’s abilities when he goes into the night is fascinating. His ability to move around with ease like a ninja warrior was a bit surprising because its clear Charlie didn’t witness much of it before. It really was a secret! Finally, understanding the thoughts behind Lincoln’s responses was also enlightening. When he makes a threat, its not even scratching the surface what he is able to do. His short direct statements are to entice others to reveal more about themselves. And his non-responsiveness is sometimes simply because he doesn’t feel the need to answer, which is relatable. His stoicism really hides so much of his personality, and it was nice to finally see the man Charlie fell in love with. He ain’t so bad!
  • Not happy - feel like quitting the series

I was upset at the prior ending, but Ms. Archer was smart to drop the price of this book. I felt I couldn’t pass on it, just to see how long it would take to rectify her mistake. Now, to have read an entire book without Charlie, only to be told she’ll be back in the next feels like a slap in the face. There was no reason to send her away. Lincoln’s no longer a hero. He’s a coward who didn’t stand by his own convictions. You’re best course of action would be to have him beg for her forgiveness and for her to deny him completely. The story could be finished with her future life without Lincoln. Since I know that’s not how the series will finish, I’m not sure I want to cont8nue. I’ll process for a day or two.
