Description

Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal).

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.

On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better.

Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments.
"Powerful." --USA Today

Straight forward and to the point. The insights and lessons, life lessons. Just buy it, and read it. You won’t regret it. This is for those who are questioning their place in life, who question what’s the point of continuing on. I needed this.

I saw Adm. McRaven’s 2014 Commencement speech, which impressed me very much. Then I heard there is a book, based on the speech - so I bought it and read it. The lessons are very fundamental. And because they are so fundamental they are easy to understand and easy to to relate to. His lessons of perseverance despite detractors and nay-sayers, of asking for help from and giving help to others, of respect and looking beyond externalities in a person, are universal. I think the reason for the positive resonance McRaven got for his book is that all these simple lessons also still apply for the high performing outliers of society like the Navy SEALS. The book is a quick read, but gives the reader plenty of food for thought and opportunities to life vicariously, before one starts to look at one’s own life - where one meets and falls short of these 10 guiding principles.

McRaven doesn’t use more words than necessary to get his point across. This was a great read.

An invaluable treatise easily applied to all facets of life. Many of these lessons I learned in my own 21 year Navy career, both the easy and hard way. I passed this book on to my teenage daughter, who demonstrates some of these lessons already, but mastery is a life-long endeavor. Highly recommended! Thanks Admiral.

What a wonderful way to inspire. The stories took me right at the places and times he described but most importantly he make me look at my life in a different angle; how much time I lost worried about unimportant things, depressed and sad. After reading the first chapters before I went to sleep, next morning I woke up with a different view of my life, first thing I did at waking up was to be thankful for another day, I made my bed as perfect and I could and I took a long walk and started a new day and a big smile on my face .

Thank you Admiral McRaven for your service, and for this wise and inspiring book of SEAL based lessons learned to meet life’s challenges and obstacles. In the current medical battle of diagnosing and battling Covid 19 in the ED, this book reminds and encourages me that we can, and must persevere, for those we care for and serve. Thank you for the inspiration, wisdom, and hope to continue do so. Bravo Zulu.
